The quick answer: begin with Stargate (1994), then SG-1 seasons 1–7. Bring in Atlantis after SG-1’s season-eight opening story, “New Order.” The remaining route pairs the overlapping seasons and gives the two SG-1 films their own checkpoints. Finish Atlantis before starting Universe.
This is a first-watch recommendation, not a claim that every fictional event can be arranged in one perfect line. It is also not a strict broadcast checklist. Titles and season boundaries are named below; plot outcomes are not.
The route to keep beside you
Use this as your starting route. Within the paired seasons, switch in comfortable story blocks, keeping multi-part episodes together. For closer episode-by-episode alignment, use the specialist checklist linked below.
Stargate (1994)
Start with the original film.
SG-1 seasons 1–7
Follow the main series before adding a second show.
SG-1 season 8 + Atlantis season 1
Begin with SG-1’s “New Order” two-part story, then Atlantis’s “Rising” opener. Complete this pair before the next.
SG-1 season 9 + Atlantis season 2
Continue the two branches together, using manageable story blocks.
SG-1 season 10 + Atlantis season 3, through “Vengeance”
Finish SG-1, but hold Atlantis’s season-three finale, “First Strike,” for the next stretch.
The Ark of Truth
Watch the SG-1 follow-up before returning to that Atlantis finale.
Atlantis: “First Strike,” season 4, then “Search and Rescue”
Continue from season three’s finale through season five’s opening episode.
Continuum
Slot the second SG-1 follow-up after “Search and Rescue.”
The rest of Atlantis season 5
Return at episode two, “The Seed,” and finish the series.
Universe seasons 1–2
Then take the next live-action branch.
Continuity checkpoints are cross-checked against GateWorld’s 2024 guide. The placement of The Ark of Truth also has primary support from Amazon MGM. Paired seasons above are not a claim that one entire season happens before the other.
Why put the film first?
It gives you a small first commitment before a much longer television journey. We recommend discovering the central idea through that opening film, then giving “Children of the Gods” room to introduce the series. You can decide whether you want more after a story, not after studying a franchise diagram.
The film opened in the U.S. in October 1994; SG-1 began in July 1997. Our suggestion is a viewing choice, not an instruction to begin with the earliest flashback you can find.
When do SG-1 and Atlantis overlap?
The matching pairs are SG-1 8 / Atlantis 1, SG-1 9 / Atlantis 2, and SG-1 10 / Atlantis 3. Treat each as a shared viewing era. Watching every SG-1 season before touching Atlantis is convenient, but trades away the way those later branches developed together.
At the first handoff, watch SG-1’s two-part “New Order,” then Atlantis’s “Rising.” Their U.S. premieres began a week apart in July 2004. Platforms sometimes combine feature-length openers, so follow the episode title and the named story, not just a service’s episode number.
Do I have to alternate after every episode?
No. Our beginner route uses the paired eras as guardrails, not an alarm that tells you to change shows every forty minutes. If you want fewer switches, use longer blocks and accept that a reference may arrive slightly out of sequence. Finish both branches of one era before the next, and keep connected two- and three-part stories together.
One useful early checkpoint: finish SG-1’s “Moebius” before Atlantis’s season-one “The Siege” finale. GateWorld discusses this in its comparison of viewing approaches. If small continuity details are part of the fun for you, its full optimized episode list is the more precise companion. We link that work rather than reproducing its entire checklist.
The two movie handoffs worth remembering
The Ark of Truth
Place this after SG-1’s finale, “Unending,” and before Atlantis’s season-three finale, “First Strike.” Stop Atlantis after “Vengeance” if you reach that point first. Amazon MGM explicitly places the film between those two finales. It reached U.S. DVD in March 2008, but that release date is not its story position. Story placement · Release reference
Continuum
Continue Atlantis through season four and the season-five opener, “Search and Rescue.” Watch Continuum next, then resume Atlantis at “The Seed.” The episode provides the handoff. This is why our route does not simply put both SG-1 films together immediately after SG-1. Episode reference · Film reference
Where does Universe fit?
Our route puts its two seasons after Atlantis. Begin with “Air” and let that series establish its own rhythm. You do not need to reorganize earlier shows around isolated backstory scenes. The broad screen-history order and series lengths are documented in Amazon MGM’s overview.
The optional detours
Origins or Catherine?
Stargate Origins is a 2018 prequel set in 1939. Stargate Origins: Catherine assembles the ten web episodes into a feature presentation. Choose one version; they are not two separate required stories. We recommend leaving the prequel for later, when you are already curious about the world. The earlier fictional setting does not make it our preferred first watch. What about Infinity?
The 2002–2003 animated series sits outside the main live-action continuity. Keep it as a separate curiosity rather than inserting it between SG-1 episodes. GateWorld’s continuity FAQ is the reference for that distinction.
How we checked the route
Release history comes from AFI, Amazon MGM and specialist title records. Close-continuity checkpoints use episode evidence and GateWorld’s 2024 guide. Its older guide describes looser alternatives; we do not silently mix those movie placements into this route.
- AFI Catalog: Stargate — original-film opening.
- Amazon MGM’s historical franchise overview — series spans and lengths, Origins’s setting, and Ark’s placement.
- GateWorld: optimized watch order, September 2024 — detailed crossover reference.
- GateWorld: three viewing approaches, April 2021 — the tradeoffs between blocks and precise alternation.
- GateWorld: “Search and Rescue” — the Continuum handoff.
- GateWorld: Origins feature-cut announcement, June 2018 — alternate presentation of the web series.
