Andor or Rogue One first? Choose the route that suits you

Andor leads into Rogue One, then A New Hope in story order. Compare that route with release order, place both Andor seasons, and protect your preferred spoiler boundary.

In story order, watch Andor season one, then season two, then Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, then A New Hope. If you want Cassian’s journey to unfold forward without first learning the later film’s outcome, that is our recommended route through this particular branch. Release order is different, and remains a sensible choice if you prefer to encounter the films before their later-made backstory.

This guide covers those two seasons and two films, rather than every Star Wars release between them. It names the connection and the existence of a final season, but does not reveal character fates, final scenes or mission outcomes. Our Star Wars hub has the broader nine-film saga routes if you want a starting point for the central episode sequence instead.

The forward story route

  1. Andor season one: begin the series at its beginning, rather than using a recap as a substitute for a first watch.
  2. Andor season two: finish the series’ second and final season before moving to the film.
  3. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story: continue into the feature film to which the series leads.
  4. Star Wars: A New Hope, Episode IV: follow the film’s connection into the original Star Wars story.

The relationship is documented, rather than guessed from shared characters. StarWars.com’s May 2025 Tony Gilroy interview describes Andor’s completed second and final season as leading directly into Rogue One. Its Gareth Edwards retrospective describes Rogue One leading into A New Hope. Both interviews discuss major outcomes; you can use the sequence here without reading those details.

The recommendation follows from a preference, not a rule of canon: if you want an earlier story to remain open-ended as you encounter it, start earlier. That does not prove the same route is best for every viewer. Someone who enjoys knowing the destination may find the later-made series interesting for precisely the opposite reason.

What release order changes

Within this limited selection, the release sequence is A New Hope (1977), Rogue One (2016), Andor season one (2022), then season two (2025). The dates are documented in the official screen viewing guide and the Andor series record. This filtered list is not a claim that nothing else in Star Wars came out between those years.

Release order lets the earlier-made films establish the world and then returns to a character’s past through television. You encounter later story events sooner, so the series becomes an exploration of how people reach a destination you partly know. The forward route instead asks you to follow the developing relationships before arriving at that destination. Neither description requires a plot reveal to make the tradeoff clear.

If you are completely new to Star Wars and only want one film tonight, we still recommend A New Hope as the hub’s small first sample. A starting point for the whole franchise and a route through the Andor branch are different decisions. You do not have to commit to a television series just to try a film.

Where the second season fits

Andor is no longer a one-season stop on this route. Its second and final season completed the series in 2025. Lucasfilm’s official preview explains that its 12-episode story covers the four years leading toward Rogue One, arranged in four three-episode chapters. That structure concerns one season’s storytelling, not twelve consecutive years of fictional history.

For a manageable watch, our suggestion is to consider each chapter a possible evening-sized stopping boundary, while leaving yourself free to pause sooner. You do not need to recreate the original weekly release schedule. You also do not need to insert the film after season one simply because an older watch list was written before the second season arrived.

Choose from where you are now

I have seen neither Andor nor Rogue One

For this branch, choose Andor seasons one and two followed by Rogue One if you want forward discovery. Choose Rogue One first if you want a single-film commitment and are comfortable learning a later part of the story first. The factual handoff stays the same whichever experience you prefer.

I have already watched Rogue One

Begin Andor with season one, then continue through season two. You cannot restore an unknown destination, but you can watch how the series builds the path to it. A later Rogue One rewatch is optional; it is not an extra new chapter.

I have finished Andor

Rogue One is the next story stop on the forward route, followed by A New Hope. There is no instruction to queue another series between these handoffs. If you want to branch elsewhere, use a guide that labels its different purpose rather than confusing that detour with this sequence.

Notice the handoff without turning it into homework

Try one small viewing question: what information does each opening assume you already have? Note a relationship, place or goal that is explained immediately, and one that is left for you to infer. After both works, compare your notes without treating a repeated name as proof that the stories use the same pace or point of view. That is an original critical exercise, not a report of a viewing test.
